Monday medieval quiz

11/26/2012

Congratulations to Mathhew Hughes for his answer to last week's quiz, yes, we were talking about one of the strangest relics ever: the Holy Foreskin.

Let's change our subject this week. The Middle Ages have greatly influenced our collective imagination. Still today many artworks refer directly to visual patterns developed during the so-called Dark Ages. Cinema is not an exception, and precisely there lies our question today. Here it goes:

Which 21st century movie designed one of its settings inspired by this medieval building?

Extra clues?
1) In the movie, it depicts a palace
2) Actually, it is more a saga than a movie
3) It is based on a book written by a philologist...

Now, the answer should provide the name of the medieval building, the name of the movie and the name of the setting... Have fun!!

Ooook, but could you elaborate a bit? Which movie, specifically, which setting, which medieval building are we talking about?

I did my homework.

The building is the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, and it was used as an inspiration for Minas Tirith, which is the capital of Gondor.

It appears in the third movie, The Return of the King with the epic siege and battle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAW2LxJRLqM

Ok, NOW we've got our winner! Thanks Eduard and congratulations! Indeed the Carolingian Palatine Chapel of Aachen must have been the inspiration for the royal palace of Minas Tirith.

Stay medieval!
