Bescós stated that the Bello Punico's Catalan version was a translation from an Italian work, although the chapter's structure of the text is the same than in Latin. It seems to be a scholar exercise that Alegre did during his years in Palerm (1460s) and that he would reuse in the years of the siege of Barcelona (1471-1472) with another intention. Bescós argued that Alegre's family was in the city during the conflict and that it might be in this moment when the author added to the work a preface addressed to Vilatorta. Knowing Vilatorta's biography and the historical context helps to understand the meaning that Alegre probably wanted to give to the text.
The Bello Punico's translation was the subject of Bescós' doctoral thesis, almost certainly the first one that vindicates the study of Francesc Alegre's figure and work.
